A Place for Health and Community – Architecture with Responsibility

In a town in North East Germany, a pioneering residential and commercial building has been constructed, setting new standards for healthcare, living, and urban quality of life. Located directly opposite the existing medical centre, the project represents not just a new building, but a well-conceived overall concept that combines functionality, sustainability, and architectural quality.

The complex comprises four flat-roofed, solidly constructed buildings with brick facades and standing seam cladding. The buildings are one, three, and four storeys high, with partial basements. A key feature is the underground parking garage with rear access, ensuring direct access for emergency services. This guarantees short response times and seamless emergency logistics – a crucial factor for the building's medical use.

In addition to space for medical practices and healthcare services, the building also offers assisted living apartments, two high-end penthouses, and five modern rental apartments. This blend of medical care and diverse housing options creates synergies and makes the project a key component of urban development in the neighbourhood.

In parallel with the new building, the medical centre opposite also underwent comprehensive energy-efficient renovation. This resulted in a harmonious overall concept that enhances the location both architecturally and functionally, ensuring its long-term viability.

Windows that offer more

A central element of the building's quality is the ARTEVO windows from REHAU. Their elegant grey exterior blends seamlessly into the modern facade design and represents the highest energy efficiency, stability, and design quality. Thanks to the innovative RAU-FIPRO X technology and 360° performance, the windows offer outstanding thermal insulation and maximum design freedom.

Combined with high quality ventilation systems, controlled ventilation is achieved, which is crucial for the indoor climate, especially in medical settings. Additionally, external venetian blinds were integrated, effectively preventing overheating in the summer and creating optimal conditions for computer workstations.

Another architectural detail is that the window surfaces are connected by continuous sheet metal facade elements. These underscore the clean lines of the architecture, lend the facade clarity and elegance, and emphasise the modern character of the entire building.

Sustainability consistently implemented

The building envelope was insulated to a high standard and visually enhanced with brick slips. The old gas heating system was replaced with a modern heat pump that provides the building with efficient and sustainable energy.

A photovoltaic system on the roof also contributes to the building's own electricity supply. Together with controlled ventilation, high-quality REHAU window technology, and an efficient shading system, this results in a holistic energy concept that offers both ecological and economic advantages.

Architecture with responsibility

The architectural firm Engelshove was responsible for the construction, realising both projects – new construction and renovation – with a keen sense of functionality, design, and sustainable energy concepts.

The result is a showcase project for the healthcare industry in the region: a building that combines living, medical care and sustainability, combines sophisticated architecture with state-of-the-art building technology and puts people at the centre.
