Which Aluminium is right for you?

It can be easy to be overwhelmed by the choices available when replacing your home’s existing window systems. This is completely understandable - with so many options, how can you know which material is right for you?

The best way to approach this is to prioritise what most appeals to you in a window. Whether that’s the rustic appeal of timber windows, the virtually maintenance-free nature of PVCu windows, everyone has their priorities.

Aluminium especially is a material that greatly appeals to UK property owners, and it’s not hard to see why. The strength and sleek, modern finish associated with aluminium windows has ensured it remains a popular option. As window designs have become progressively less bulky over recent years, this popularity has continued to grow.

As such, it is clear that the sharper outlines and smooth finish associated with aluminium windows resonate. This has led to the material being used for flush casement windows in homes all over the country, as well for other windows and doors.

Drawbacks

However, these positives come with certain drawbacks that may give you pause for thought. For example, if an aluminium window is not powder coated correctly, it can corrode quickly. This, in turn, can limit the home’s curb appeal. While this is always something to be avoided, it is especially unwelcome with aluminium windows, where visual appeal is often a unique selling point.

Additionally, aluminium is an effective heat conductor, meaning aluminium windows often suffer from condensation build-up. While this drawback can be resolved by installing thermal breaks in the window, this can lead to further issues. For example, if the thermal breaks are not installed properly, the energy rating of the window will suffer. If you are looking to reduce your heating bills, this is clearly an unattractive outcome.

Replacing aluminium windows, and more specifically replacing aluminium window frames, is therefore an issue that will only grow over time. Home improvement is a logical reaction in this situation, which is why we have put together this blog. If you like the look of aluminium casement windows or flush fit windows, but are wondering what other high-performing materials are available, then read on.

Aluminium Windows and Aluminium Clad Wood

Aluminium clad wood windows are often the solution for homeowners looking to keep the striking look of aluminium windows, but avoid their energy efficiency issues. This is because the window consists of aluminium cladding surrounding an interior timber profile.

As timber windows are traditionally more energy efficient than their aluminium counterparts, an aluminium clad wood window represents a good compromise between the materials. Indeed, in both double glazing and triple glazing applications there are definite energy efficiency benefits to choosing this type of window. Furthermore, aluminium cladding protects wooden windows and doors from the damp British weather, which would otherwise quickly deteriorate if left untreated.

Despite this, certain problems still remain. Though wood is more energy-efficient than aluminium, it pales in comparison to vinyl windows. A lot of household heat escapes through windows, and timber windows have traditionally struggled to maintain good levels of thermal efficiency. By contrast, both flush fit PVCu windows and flush fit PVCu casement windows are renowned for being extremely energy efficient.

Another concern is that while aluminium clad timber windows are slightly more efficient than aluminium windows, they still experience the same corrosion problems. Consequently, homeowners replacing aluminium window frames may still see their home’s visual appeal diminished.

PVCu Aluminium Windows

Faced with these problems, homeowners should evaluate all possible material options when replacing aluminium windows, including PVCu. Though the material has traditionally been seen as a cheaper option to both aluminium windows and timber windows, this is no longer the case.

Indeed, advancing technology means the 1980s perception of PVCu flush fit windows in white, or blocky casement windows, is no longer valid. Vinyl windows now come in all shapes and sizes, and energy efficient options mirroring the look of aluminium windows are now easily possible.

REHAU’s GENEO AluTop range, for example, offers a modern, energy efficient alternative to those replacing their aluminium window frames. With a polymer profile and aluminium cover that clips over the outer frame and fits neatly to the glass, it offers excellent curb appeal and energy efficiency.

Yet beyond that, its low-maintenance surface, innovative design and weatherproof and UV-stable cover means it is far more durable than a traditional aluminium window. Combined with its outstanding thermal efficiency and wide range of colour and design choices, it truly offers the best of both worlds.
